Stanly CC - Fall 2013

Following a very successful 2012-2013 year, Stanly Community College’s PBL chapter is already off to a busy start.  On September 19, 2013, five chapter members accompanied Mr. Hazlett to the 2013 Fall Kick-Off.

Chapter officers for the year are:  Krista Bedrin (President), Chuckie Vanhoose (Vice President), Katrina Sams (Secretary-Treasurer), David Osborne (Student Government Association Representative), Hergheng Moua (Social Director), and Germanic Colson (Public Information Officer).

An organizational meeting was held on Monday, October 14, 2013.  Our chapter is excited about attending the upcoming Fall Leadership Conference in Greensboro, NC. Ideas are already in progress for our Chapter Recruitment Display Setup, applicants for the PBL-PD-F scholarship are putting the finishing touches on their applications, and the Non-Trivia Team is already hustling to prepare for competition.

Stanly Community College is also hosting a Fall Festival for students on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, and our chapter is finalizing plans for a PBL table at the event.  Weather permitting, we may exhibit our Chapter Recruitment Display Setup.  We will also be having a basket raffle that will contain 40 items in celebration of our chapter’s 40th anniversary at Stanly Community College.  Proceeds from the basket raffle will be donated to the March of Dimes.

For American Enterprise Day on November 15th, 2013, our chapter is planning to visit and tour the local Chamber of Commerce and have the director conduct the installation of new officers for the year.  In September, Stanly Community College PBL was pleased to learn that Kathy Almond was named President and CEO of the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce.  Kathy was chapter president in 1982 and received state awards in Future Business Leader Executive and Extemporaneous Speaking.  As owner of Designs of Distinction, a local gift and floral design shop, she was Stanly Community College’s PBL Business Person of the Year.

In May, Rathavone Wilder and Courtney Seidenschmidt were among the ten Stanly Community College students who received Outstanding Student Leader medallions at the college’s Leadership Convocation and Luncheon.

In preparation for the National Leadership Conference, the annual PBL dessert auction was held.  A total of twelve items were on the list and, as usual, Ms. Amirtharaj’s cherry cheese cake brought in the highest bid at $42!

Stanly CC Receives Local Recognition

The Stanly Community College chapter has been busy since last spring, and we're excited about the upcoming year and the "Igniting Innovation" theme.

After last year's SLC, two PBL'ers were among the 12 college students honored at the annual Student Leadership Awards Luncheon.  In honor of the city hosting the 2012 Democratic National Convention, the theme of awards program was "Charlotte -- A Leading City!"  Honored with college medallions were Jeri Nester and Brandon Harkey.

During the program, PBL received the SCC "Soaring Eagle" award as the Club of the Year for 2011-12.

A full page in the SCC CONNECTIONS magazine featured Stanly's SLC participation and pictures of event winners.  The magazine is published twice a year and mailed to every resident in the county and placed in waiting rooms at businesses throughout the county.

In June, Brandon Harkey attended a Chamber of Commerce meeting to present Chamber President Matt Smith with his plaque as the state PBL Business Person of the Year.  A picture of the presentation was published in the local newspaper.

Eleven chapter delegates attended the national conference in San Antonio.  State Officers Courtney Seidenschmidt and Brandon Harkey participated in the Institute for Leaders program preceding NLC.  Four NLC pictures were published with an article in the local newspaper.

Members assisted with the Chamber's Business Expo in October, getting the opportunity to meet business owners throughout the county.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming fall conference and send all our fellow PBL members best wishes for a good year.
