Isothermal CC - Fall 2018

The Isothermal Chapter of PBL has been off to a great start this year. Four members of our team traveled to Greensboro, NC for the Fall Leadership Development Conference where we competed in the non-trivia event and the Recruitment Display. While we are sad to say that we did not win the non-trivia event, we did place first in the Recruitment Display event.

Things have been extremely busy around campus also! PBL has held its first 2 fundraisers, the first of many to come! The club raised a little over $800 during our Chick-Fil-A day (this was a first for our club), and we raised around $150 during the community’s own Octoberfest. We still have many fundraisers to go. We will be selling concessions at the school’s Robotics Tournament in December, and we also host an annual chili-fundraiser on campus in January or February depending on the weather.

Last, but not least, community service events are in full swing around town as well. We are currently in the middle of our annual Salvation Army Angel Tree, and we are partnering with the Uncommon Mentors on campus to collect new and gently used clothing for one of the local elementary schools. Additionally, we are collecting small lap blankets for our local Hospice House. Needless to say, PBL is doing everything we can to stay busy within our community and around campus. We are constantly building awareness of our local chapter through our outreach events and fundraising opportunities.

Isothermal CC - Spring 2017

The 2016-2017 school year at Isothermal Community College has been fantastic. We focused our attention towards recruitment and we ended up adding at least five new members. These new members have become very active in our club and are a key part of who we are. Our participation rate has certainly improved from last year. Omega Theta only had 3 remaining officers at the beginning of the year, so we elected the best individuals to serve in the remaining positions.

To start the year off we participated once again in our college's Grub Day where we competed in a scarecrow contest. Members of our club traveled to the Fall Leadership Development Conference in Greensboro where our team won First Place in the "NON-Trivia" Contest and also placed first for our recruitment table. One of our students also won one of the scholarships that was available at the fall conference. Members from our club participated in several volunteer activities, including a coat drive and collection of Christmas cards to send to our local veterans. We also donated cases of water to the local firefighters fighting the fire in Lake Lure.

This year we have completed several fundraisers. We started off with Belk cards, then had a PBL night at a local restaurant where they donated 10% of a customer's check to our club. Our club hosted its 3rd annual Chili Fundraiser and it was a success. Isothermal Community College PBL hosted the 2017 Spring Tip Off on February 2nd.  We were delighted to have the VP and Secretary of our state attend this Tip Off, as well as McKenzie Worley, the Southern Region VP.

Currently, our members are preparing for the State Leadership Conference in April. Nine of our members will be competing at state their two events.

Isothermal CC - Spring 2016

The 2015-2016 year at Isothermal Community College has been a blast. Not only did we focus on recruitment and end up doubling our members, but our participation has improved immensely. Omega Theta only had two remaining officers from last year, so we made sure to elect the very best for the other five positions.
We kicked the year off with our college's Grub Day and won the scarecrow contest by a landslide. Members from our club were involved with multiple volunteer opportunities including the fund drive for our school's radio station, welcoming middle school students to the college, and helping the Grace of God rescue mission with their soup kitchen.
There have been many fundraisers for our chapter this year. We started with Pizza Inn cards, then we sold hundreds of lollipops. Our Chili Fundraiser was rescheduled due to the weather but we succeeded in collecting even more donations than the year before. Our current fundraiser is through Tom Wats, which we will conclude the first week of March.
Currently, we are preparing for the State Leadership Conference in April. Eight of our members will be participating and everyone is getting ready to compete in their two events.

Isothermal CC - Fall 2013

We in the Omega Theta Chapter here at Isothermal are off to a slow start with our membership being the lowest it has been in years. We have tried a number of recruitment ideas such as a display table, IC3 freshman welcome event, visiting classes and are hoping those who showed interest will follow thru with paying dues!

Our fund raisers and community service projects are already under way with our Isothermal Fun Day event this week. We are also working with Belk’s on another fundraiser. Our annual Christmas Angel Tree will be starting around Thanksgiving and we are always excited about the possibility of helping children in our community.

We have two members and our adviser attending the FLDC the first weekend of November. They are looking forward to some great workshops and meeting members from all over the state. We send our wishes for a great year to all the chapters and hopes for all to have Excellence in Action as we carry out this year’s chapter plans!

Isothermal CC - Spring 2013

At our Friday, February 15 meeting we had a special presentation on Entrepreneurship. After opening business was concluded, our chapter adviser introduced Mr. Scott Hutchins, PD member and Economics/Marketing/ Entrepreneurship instructor here at Isothermal.

Mr. Hutchins discussed creating a business plan, startup capital and the significance of having passion about what it is you want to establish. The strength to never give up, to be willing to re-do and re-do if necessary to make your dream come true. He gave out a listing of Entrepreneurship traits and we discussed these as to their importance.

He then discussed two famous entrepreneurs, one easily seen as one, Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s. After Mr. Thomas returned from the Korean War, he went to work for a Kentucky Fried Chicken owner and took over a store which was faltering. After a few years, he was able to sell the franchises for almost two million dollars. His passion, however, was hamburgers and his desire for a great one which at the time he couldn’t find in his area. He opened his own hamburger restaurant offering his unique square hamburgers and whatever you wanted on them. Through hard work, dedication and his face as the face of Wendy’s, we all know the rest of his story.

The other entrepreneur was one not necessarily thought of as such and that was Nicholas Sparks, the author. Sparks wanted to write and although he went to University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship and later worked in several sales jobs, he never gave up on his writing. He endured the loss of his parents at fairly early ages and financial hardships but persevered in his desire to write. Now with years of success as the author of a large number of books he has seen eight of them become motion pictures. His story is still developing.

Our members enjoyed and appreciated the efforts of one of our Professional Division members to help us as we have been Igniting Innovations this year!

Isothermal CC Firing up the Fundraisers

The Omega Theta Chapter is off to a great start this fall. We have already attended the Kick-Off at AB Tech. We have participated in a joint fundraiser with Phi Theta Kappa where we organized and ran the concession stand for a John Tess concert at the Isothermal Foundation Venue. We are currently working on getting our Isothermal Activity Day booth together, which includes a guessing game and dressing up our scarecrow for entry into a campus contest. We will also have a Jewelry sale fundraiser during the activities. We have several officers going to the FLDC in Raleigh and to the NFLC in Charlotte. Most of us have never been to a conference, so we are really exciting about going. In the near future, we will be starting our annual Angel Tree project, and annual Coat Drive and Canned Food Drive to help less fortunate families out at Christmas.

Our new officers for this college year are:
Mary Brooks -- President
Pam Bridges -- VP Community Service
Lauren Henderson -- VP Fund Raising
Shannon Whitesides -- Secretary
Emily Antonio -- Reporter
