Rowan-Cabarrus CC - Spring 2019

Leadership Development Seminar Held at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Phi Beta Lambda was proud to host a Leadership Development Seminar on February 16, 2019 at their North Campus in Salisbury, North Carolina. The seminar was titled, 'How to Get the Job You Really Want', and it was developed to address all of the steps within the process of getting a job. Four speakers were asked to present the topics covered.

First to speak was Dr. Pamela Thompson, PBL Advisor and Instructor at Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Dr. Thompson discussed the ways to search for a job, as well as things to consider when preparing to start a job search-such as cleaning up your social media before even starting the job search process. She had many excellent suggestions and great resources to access for more information. She has also made her PowerPoint available to anyone who would like to contact me to request it.

Our next speaker was Dan Hazlett, State Advisor and Advisor at Stanly Community College in Albemarle, North Carolina. Mr. Hazlett spoke about resume writing and gave many tips on how to create the best resume for different circumstances. He brought handouts with him that contained examples of a resume and cover letter, as well as other resources available. Also included were key words to use in different situations, which really helps to give ideas when writing a resume. Mr. Hazlett also stressed how much of what PBL members do can be used on a resume and how the board had designed many of the events to be able to be utilized in that capacity.

After a short break, Mr. Rick Gardner, NCPBL PDF Board of Directors President, presented the topic of interview skills. Mr. Gardner discussed not only how to conduct oneself in an interview, but also how to 'expect the unexpected' in an interview and be prepared to adjust to any unconventional circumstances that may arise. For instance, he mentioned a fire drill that occurred during an interview he was conducting. The person did not react adversely to the interview being partially conducted in the parking lot, which helped to ensure a positive outcome for the interviewee. Mr. Gardner also used a PowerPoint that he stated would be available. This will be provided to anyone who requests it of Jessica Jacobsen (email address below.) He also brought the printouts of the slides to hand out to the attendees at the seminar.

To conclude the seminar, Ms. Angelica Mills, NCPBL State Historian, presented the topic of 'How to Dress for Success'. Ms. Mills stressed the importance of dressing appropriately for the circumstances. What was considered Business Attire and Business Casual for men and for women was covered. Also discussed were the importance of color and what each color represented in the business world. For instance, did you know that black is considered a 'power color'? Or that red should be avoided, unless you have a very vibrant personality? For women, she went over how to know what was considered modest and appropriate in the workplace.

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College PBL is hoping to hold this seminar again next year.
