Stanly CC - Spring 2013

Since October, the Stanly CC chapter has been busy with several activities.

PD-F Member Kalia Vang spoke on her involvement with PBL and presented membership certificates at a membership induction dinner held at a local restaurant.

The chapter was excited to receive the Largest Delegation certificate at the FLDC.  Chapter Preisdent Courtney Seidenschmidt was named one of the NCPBL PD-F Scholarship recipients for the year at FLDC.  Members enjoyed touring the state capitol and visiting the History and Natural Science museums in Raleigh on the afternoon of FLDC.

Courtney, Brandon Harkey, and Mr. Hazlett attended the National Fall Leadership Conference at the Westin Hotel and Charlotte Convention Center in November.

Members of the Stanly chapter, along with Pfeiffer University PBL and West Stanly High School FBLA, attended the February meeting of the Stanly County Board of Commissioners for a PBL Week Proclamation signing.  Courtney and Brandon spoke on behalf of the chapter.  The meeting was aired throughout the week on the local tv station.

Stanly Community College recognized the chapter during PBL Week with a banner on the front page of the college's website.  The chapter did a display in the lobby of the library promoting PBL.

Members surprised Mr. Hazlett with a large popcorn tub of movie tickets, candy, and a gift card to his favorite, Chic-Fil-A, on Adviser Appreciation Day.

On Valentine's Day, Cupid (also known as PBL'er Taylor Fraley) assisted in collecting for March of Dimes during the campus Valentine Party.  For contributions, students and faculty could write messages about a family baby on a cutout of a purple teddy bear that was part of a display in the Student Center.   Eastgate Theater provided movie tickets for drawings from those who contributed.  Instructor Merlin Amiratharaj made two of her famous cherry cheesecakes to auction on Valentine's Day for March of Dimes.  A total of over $100 was raised.

The highlight of the winter was the selection of Ms. Charlotte Maness as the chapter's Business Person of the Year for 2013.  A photo of Courtney presenting Ms. Maness with her award was carried in the local newspaper.  Ms. Maness, a retired banker who now operates two personal businesses in addition to working as Community Relations Director for Storm Industries, is a major supporter of PBL at the local level.  She has also led workshops at the State Leadership Conference and was a presenter at the Charlotte NFLC.  Ms. Maness was a member of FBLA at Asheboro High School and credits the organization for helping her realize the possibilities for women in business at a time when that was not a common career path.

The chapter is looking forward to SLC and seeing all our friends from around the state.















Isothermal CC - Spring 2013

At our Friday, February 15 meeting we had a special presentation on Entrepreneurship. After opening business was concluded, our chapter adviser introduced Mr. Scott Hutchins, PD member and Economics/Marketing/ Entrepreneurship instructor here at Isothermal.

Mr. Hutchins discussed creating a business plan, startup capital and the significance of having passion about what it is you want to establish. The strength to never give up, to be willing to re-do and re-do if necessary to make your dream come true. He gave out a listing of Entrepreneurship traits and we discussed these as to their importance.

He then discussed two famous entrepreneurs, one easily seen as one, Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s. After Mr. Thomas returned from the Korean War, he went to work for a Kentucky Fried Chicken owner and took over a store which was faltering. After a few years, he was able to sell the franchises for almost two million dollars. His passion, however, was hamburgers and his desire for a great one which at the time he couldn’t find in his area. He opened his own hamburger restaurant offering his unique square hamburgers and whatever you wanted on them. Through hard work, dedication and his face as the face of Wendy’s, we all know the rest of his story.

The other entrepreneur was one not necessarily thought of as such and that was Nicholas Sparks, the author. Sparks wanted to write and although he went to University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship and later worked in several sales jobs, he never gave up on his writing. He endured the loss of his parents at fairly early ages and financial hardships but persevered in his desire to write. Now with years of success as the author of a large number of books he has seen eight of them become motion pictures. His story is still developing.

Our members enjoyed and appreciated the efforts of one of our Professional Division members to help us as we have been Igniting Innovations this year!


Barton College Spring 2013

The Gamma Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) at Barton College is continuing its efforts to make a difference in the Wilson community, provide leadership development, enhance its visibility, increase membership, and raise funds for its projects.  

Four chapter members and an adviser attended the Fall Leadership Development Conference in Raleigh, with Eastern Region Vice President Sarah Casey participating with fellow state officers on the program.  Barton’ Non-Trivia team made us “proud” by earning second place.  Two members and an advisor attended the Eastern Region Tip-Off in February with Eastern Region Vice President Casey and a Barton College PBL adviser participating on the program.

In the fifth year of the Barton College “Day of Service,” Gamma Gamma chapter members enthusiastically volunteered to participate.  Members cataloged new textbooks in the Library of the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf.  (We like those inside jobs!)

In November, the chapter celebrated Free Enterprise Day with Dawn Montoya speaking to the members. Ms. Montoya is a former Barton College chapter member, a former State President, and a former National Southern Region Vice President.  

As a member of the Wilson Chamber of Commerce, the Gamma Gamma chapter assisted with the chamber’s Annual Business Meeting. Our chapter president had the honor of attending this meeting and receiving recognition for Phi Beta Lambda’s efforts in the preparation of the event.  

In recruiting new members, chapter members have attended several Barton College classes to promote Phi Beta Lambda. Members prepared power point presentations, played PBL promotional videos, and distributed handouts highlighting the benefits of the organization. They were also able to share with the students their experience with Phi Beta Lambda and all of the skills acquired through their involvement. The chapter has also exhibited at Barton’s Open Houses—advertising our organization to prospective students.

Phi Beta Lambda members and chapter advisers are “Igniting Innovations” by showcasing the Gamma Gamma chapter’s activities of community service and leadership development while recruiting members at Barton’s Freshman Fair, Club Fair, and Major’s Fair. During the semester, we have partnered with the Wilson Chamber of Commerce, the Wilson County Department of Social Services, and the Wil-Med Foundation assisting in their community service activities.  The chapter continues to partner with a local organization to deliver “Home Delivered Meals" every Thursday.



Asheville-Buncombe Technical CC - Spring 2013

The Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College chapter of Phi Beta Lambda has been working hard during the year to help our students “Igniting Innovation”.  During the past few months we have been working on increasing our chapter membership and reaching out to the local community.

A-B Tech members Jennifer Heath, Adrienne Sparks, Albert Tumash, and Kris Brookins attended the FLDC in Raleigh with advisers Dr. Kathie Doole and Ms Veronica Dooly.  Our Non-Trivia team of Adrienne, Kris, and Albert won First Place and member Jennifer Heath was awarded First Place for the 4th Annual Commemorative Pin Design.  Advisers Kathie Doole and Veronica Dooly gave workshops to members of PBL attending the conference.

During November our chapter assisted with the Fly Fishing Expo held at the WNC Agricultural Center.  Members helped with registration, assisting visitors, and collecting survey information.  December was a very busy month where our chapter sponsored three children for the annual SGA Children’s Holiday Party.  Members spent time with each child meeting Santa, having lunch, opening stockings, and riding Big Wheels that members assembled.  The chapter also sponsored a “Snapshot with Santa” during the month as a fundraiser where the public could come to campus on specific days and have their picture taken with Santa using various props.  Also, members Adrienne Sparks and Kyle Davis, with adviser Dr. Doole, assisted at the local Keller Williams Fashion Victims Ball at the Crowne Plaza Resort to help raise money for local charities.

During February, member Jennifer Heath and adviser Dr. Kathie Doole attended the Winter Tip-Off at Gaston College.  For Adviser Appreciation Day, all three advisers were surprised with a lunch and gifts.  In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, our chapter participated in the SGA sponsored “Get Engaged” event on February 14.  This event allowed campus clubs and various school services to help students become more informed as to what is available on campus.  Our chapter chose to have information on starting a business by creating a resource guide that included information on what is free enterprise, local community resources, educational opportunities, and financing.

Upcoming events include a Books Are Fun fundraiser and attending SLC.  The A-B Tech chapter would like to wish all chapters the best of luck at this year’s State Leadership Conference!



VGCC A Member's Reflection

For whatever reason, I feel the need to write to you and share my PBL experience, a testimonial so to speak.

My chapter at Vance Granville Community College is a perfect mix of PBL members and PD members of all ages and they are like a family, (some of them literally since both of my sons also joined PBL.)  One of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had since my boys were very small was seeing my sons on stage at State Leadership Conference receiving an award for their competitive event, pride welling up within me. Then, having all three of us qualify for Nationals in San Antonio was the “icing on the cake.”   I truly wish I had discovered PBL many years ago. My PBL journey has brought my through a whole new world!  I have learned so much about myself that I didn’t realize was possible. Without my PBL chapter, Chi Beta Chi, supporting and encouraging me, I would never have attempted some of the challenges that the competitions have presented. But through the competitions at the State and National levels I have become more confident in my skills, abilities, and knowledge.  Because of that, I have been able to overcome my insecurity that prevented me from socializing with people I did not know, allowing me to meet many interesting people from all over this country.  Whether it be waiting in line to get into a competition or sitting next to someone in a workshop, a conversation can be initiated and a new friendship could arise.  The comradely of the PBL organization makes it so much easier to step out of that comfort zone and reach out to a stranger because, after all, we are part of the same “family.”

In addition to all I have learned, achieved and accomplished through PBL, the places I have traveled like Orlando, Florida and San Antonio, Texas, I would NEVER have been able to go if it wasn’t for PBL.  I never imagined that I would see The Alamo, in person. My sons’ and I were able to visit San Antonio, TX together and share a wonderful experience.  Forever etched in my mind are the memories and images of the beautiful sights I’ve seen and the friendships that have been formed as a result of the unity PBL creates for its members.  My first year in the Chi Beta Chi Chapter, at SLC, I shared a room with a woman I did not know very well, except for seeing her at meetings from time to time, and we are now the closest of friends!

I am forever grateful for ALL my experiences in PBL, even the grueling hours, standing in the HOT sun, over a huge charcoal grill, along the edge of the track at the Charlotte Motor Speedway or passing out bottles of water to concert goers at an outdoor concert on a VERY hot, dry, dusty day just to raise funds for the Chapter to help offset the cost of attending conferences. There is no doubt in my mind that when my education is finished I will be a Professional Division member for life and I hope to be a very active, very involved one at that so I can help to ensure that many, many other students (young and old(er) will have an opportunity to experience FBLA-PBL!



Vance-Granville CC - Mar 2013

The student members and the Professional Division members of the Chi Beta Chi Chapter from Vance Granville Community College have teamed up on several occasions to represent PBL and VGCC in Community Service.  

PD member Gabrielle Norfleet and Chapter Vice-President Diane Power volunteered with the Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern NC for their annual Walk to END Alzheimer’s where they assisted with numerous tasks.  PD Karen Driver assisted VP Diane Power in delivering “Blanket Bundles,” filled by chapter members, to a local drop-off location.  Blanket Bundles was a promotion sponsored by a local/national Radio Station to collect blankets, toiletries, and non-perishable foods for the homeless or those in dire situations.

Chi Beta Chi members will also be teaming with the Student Government Association of Vance Granville Community College to volunteer at the Annual Telethon for UNC-TV to raise funds to help cover the cost of keeping PBS television on the air.













Vance-Granville CC - Feb 2013

The Phi Beta Lambda organization at Vance Granville has been very busy this month. Our first line of business was to help celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving students and staff the opportunity to buy carnation flowers for their loved ones. Also, with the celebration of black month, VGCC chapter of PBL alongside VGCC was able to provide two food ordinated events. The first one with the help of PBL members was to provide slices of red velvet cake in the student lounge to staff and student alike. PBL members were able to interact more with the majority of the student population here on campus and inform them on what a great asset to their lives joining PBL will provide. The second one was a soul food special. Students and staff were encouraged to come and taste a vast variety of soul food in the civic center. This gave another opportunity for PBL members to get out there in our PBL shirts and interact with the regular student body and try to boost membership and let people out there understand what we do. Finally, one of our big this here in PBL to do is raise money for the march of dimes. We organized a fundraiser that is still taking place for members of staff to wear their favorite college team logos and paraphernalia with a little donation to the March of Dimes. There also is another part to it. Students can donate money towards teachers involved to wear their favorite team’s rival colors. Whichever teacher raise’s the least amount of money they have to wear their favorite team’s rival paraphernalia.



Nash CC - Spring 2013

The Kappa Alpha Chi chapter at Nash Community College is on a roll!  So far, this has proved to be a very successful year for our chapter. Members have been very busy working on completing individual and chapter goals and projects to prepare for the State Leadership Conference in Charlotte.

Our chapter really took advantage of PBL Week on our campus. Our college had Club Awareness Day during PBL Week so this worked out great! Members distributed brochures and bookmarks, informing fellow college students about the benefits of joining PBL. The club also designated a day for members to dress in business attire to exemplify the professionalism of the organization and what PBL stands for.

Our chapter also celebrated Advisor Appreciation Day by giving thanks to the chapter advisor for her support and dedication. Members awarded the advisor with a plaque, gift card, and balloons that made her day. The members of the Nash Community College PBL chapter are grateful for all the enthusiasm, hard work, and sacrifices made to make this year a success!




Rowan-Cabarrus CC - Spring 2013

For the fall semester, we had a successful “coats for the cold drive” and collected over 100 coats, hats, gloves and scarves. These coats were given to the Community Council of Rowan County to help the less fortunate in our community. We have now turned our attention to the spring semester and started the “spring cleaning clothing drive.” We will be collecting all articles of clothing for the warmer months ahead. Please feel free to go through your closet, donate, and drop off in any one of the boxes located on each of the RCCC’s campuses.

We will host a “pancake breakfast” on Saturday, April 20th 2013 from 7:30am-9:30am. The event will take place at FATZ, located in the Afton Ridge Plaza. 6081 Bayfield Parkway Concord, NC 28027. Cost is $7.00 per ticket. A ticket will allow 3 pancakes, sausage, and your choice of beverage. Tickets can be purchased before the event or at the door the day of the event. On Saturday, March 30th 2013, we will hold our 1st Annual Conference Walk on “the loop,” located by RCCC’s Research Campus in Kannapolis. Registraation will begin at 8:30am and last approximately one hour. The walk itself will start at 10am and continue through the morning, to conclude around 12 noon. The walk is roughly 3 miles in distance. We are asking for a $25.00 donation, but all donations will graciously be accepted. All monies donated will go toward the cost of State Leadership Conference. Finally, we have a Financial Literacy Workshop planned for late March/early April. The exact date, time and location is still to be determined. The workshop will feature a keynote speaker from a local financial institution. The speaker will cover topics concerning today’s student.



Central Carolina CC - Spring 2013

Spring is here and the chapter is very busy with projects coming to a close and many preparing for SLC in April. Membership has doubled since last year and more continue to trickle in as we get closer to the March deadline. The chapter has done a great job creating a buzz around campus and promoting the club.

The fall saw a great effort by the chapter to demonstrate to the community its ability to lead and make a difference. Several community service projects took place involving work with several organizations in an effort to supply food for the winter. Not only did the chapter participate by providing resources the chapter also oversaw the projects by organizing the event which included close to a dozen organizations.

The chapter hosted its annual spaghetti dinner in January for a total of $1800 dollars to help fund upcoming events such as SLC. This is one of the largest fundraisers the chapter holds during the year. The next fundraiser on the docket is a pancake breakfast just before SLC. The chapter throughout the year will do raffles that include tickets to UNC basketball games, 50/50, and many fun prizes that seem to get the campus excited.

Other projects this spring include “The Gambit”, “Earth Day Fair” and “The Next Step”, projects that help promote the goals of the chapter to support community service and free enterprise.  The chapter also provides support to other organizations on campus as well as participating in major chapter projects. These events include Education Celebration that took place at the WB Wicker Center for continuing education and career readiness as well as the upcoming Career Fair at the Dennis Wicker Civic Center. The chapter has become the top choice for the campus when resources are limited and help is needed.

The new semester has also seen the members very busy getting ready for SLC. A lot of excitement when members returned from Winter Tip-Off at Wake Tech CC, where information was overflowing for SLC and NCL to get the chapter motivated. Deciding what events to compete in, whom to team up with, and writing reports. The CCCC chapter will take its largest delegation to date to Charlotte. Our chapter looks forward to a great experience in April and meeting others who help to make NCPBL one of the best in the country.



Randolph CC - Spring 2013

After a trying fall semester, our chapter got off to a busy start. January marked the being of our spring recruitment. On club day, we spoke to many potential members.  We were excited to attend the Tip-off at Wake-Tech. We connected with friend we had not seen since fall conference and shared vital information about fundraising. After coming back from tip-off our fundraising began. We have chosen to do a variety of fundraisers including: selling candy-kiss roses,our annual Krispy Kreme doughnut sale, and our photo shoot. We have been working on doing a community service project with a local business, Samaritan Maids. Part of their business is giving back to the community by cleaning for cancer patients for free. To help we are planning to go and clean a cancer patient’s house later in March. On March 15, we will be hosting a seminar on resume and interviewing for the RCC student body. Our hope is to give back to the school and get our name out on campus. Finally, we have been planning for SLC.  We are excited to go this year and celebrate the member that will be graduating this May. Even though our semester has been busy, we are still working hard on maintaining our studies and a successful PBL chapter.  On behalf of all of RCC’s Phi Beta Nu Chapter thanks for a great year- Jessica Steven, President.



Durham Technicall CC - Spring 2013

In 2012-13 DTCC-PBL has participated in a number of community service activities. We served as judges for the FBLA Triad Regional Competition at Orange High School in Hillsborough on December 15. The club judged the test part of the competition the week previous. Also in December, we volunteered with the Museum of Life and Science for their annual Santa Train. The members who participated truly enjoyed spending time with the Museum’s guest, especially the children who were so excited to see Santa. For the Christmas holiday, the club adopted a family of four. The participating members shopped, wrapped presents for, and delivered stockings and gifts to the entire family.

We have also participated in a food drive on campus where DTCC-PBL raised 159 pounds of food. There have also been several successful  fundraisers held to help the club meet financial goals.

Over-all DTCC-PBL has had an exciting and very productive year and we all look forward to a bigger and better 2013-14.








Gaston College - Spring 2013

This past fall, our chapter had the wonderful opportunity to attend the National Fall Leadership Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina at the Westin Hotel. Simultaneously, the NFLC was held in two other locations across the United States—Denver, CO and Indianapolis, IN.

During the conference, members of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) attended workshops and networked with other chapters. The workshops covered topics like dressing for success (Men’s Wearhouse), learning to manage your stress, and reinventing yourself.

Over the weekend, we reunited with the FBLA chapter from Puerto Rico we met at the NLC in San Antonio last summer.  We presented each of them with a bag of NC goodies and some Krispy Kreme doughnuts!  In return, we were given pins, and key chains that represented Puerto Rico.

We were able to celebrate the March of Dimes® Prematurity Awareness Day while attending the conference.  On behalf of that, we wore purple shirts and accessories, and then handed out awareness stickers with purple ribbons showing our support for preemies.

Some of the weekend highlights included the opening and closing sessions.  We were entertained, motivated and inspired! The guest speakers were Ryan Moran, and Vicki Roundtree. Ryan had us all laughing.  He also taught us about finding our talents and gifts reinforcing what a difference one person can make.  Mrs. Roundtree added value to our lives by sharing her goal-oriented outlook on life.

The entire weekend was surely one to remember. Gaston College PBL really set Charlotte on fire as we ignited innovation!



Mitchell CC - Spring 2013

Mitchell Community College members attended the 2012 Fall Leadership Development Conference in Raleigh, NC. The members learned a lot about the March of Dimes, CMAP, TLLA, professionalism, and leadership. The members enjoyed networking with fellow NCPBL members across the state. The members also attended the dance and loved the state officer "Jail & Bail!"

Mitchell Community College members attended the 2012 National Fall Leadership Conference in Charlotte, NC. The members attended workshops and networked with members across the country. The members enjoyed the dance and speaking to the national officers. The members gained so much knowledge about the upcoming year and was extremely excited to bring all of the information learned back to campus.

Mitchell Community College members attended the 2013 Spring Tip-Off meeting at Gaston College. The members learned about the State Leadership Conference, competitive events, National Leadership Conference, and running for a state office. The member are excited to enter the competitive events at SLC!



Wake Technical CC - Spring 2013

Wake Technical Community College hosted the 2013 'Winter Tip-Off".  Students from the state’s central region gathered in Raleigh, NC at Wake Tech’s North campus to discuss the SLC, review competitive events forms, deadlines, and important information pertaining to this year’s conference. The event was hosted by Central Region Vice-President, Fiaunna Shivers. Presenters included Ms. Martha Cranford, Conference Director; Ms. Michele Parris, adviser at Durham Technical Community College and Treasurer of  NCPBL Professional Division-Foundation Board; Ms. LaTonya Steele, adviser at Vance-Granville Community College; Mr. Mike Fann, adviser at Central Carolina Community College; and Wake Tech’s adviser, Ms. Deborah Oronzio. Also in attendance was President Pro Temp, John Anderson of Pfieffer University. Making a special appearance was Dean Walter Martin of Wake Tech and NCPBL State Awards Program Committee.

Wake Tech is looking forward to another great year in Charlotte, NC and an even better summer in Anaheim, CA.
